Rick and Morty will ne'er be the same again. The season 5 finis "Rickmurai Jack" has not only confirmed the drama backstory of Rick, but it's also unconcealed two master plans that blow the reveal wide open.

But first, let's head support to Rick's agone. The series drops a heavy helping of lore into our laps this week. We discover what we all suspected: an alternate, evil version of Hayrick dropped into 'our' Rick's creation and killed his wife Diane and daughter Beth.

That sent the younger Turn on a voluted of drinking and destruction, culminating in him finding the killer and putting a permanent end to that Rick. Atomic number 3 hinted at earlier in the flavour, Rick hopped to another universe and found another Beth to dwell with.

Merely wait, there's more. The season 5 finale brought posterior the eyepatch-wearing Evilness Morty. Last seen in a major part during season 3's "Tales From the Citadel", the in real time-Chairwoman Morty reveals that Crick – and countless other Ricks – have conspired crosswise an dateless amount of universes to make sure Beth and Jerry meet and, so, a Morty is born.

That every leads to Malefic Morty's plan. The product of all of these Mortys, the Finite Curve Barrier (Marvel fans, think of this as the Unnameable Timeline simply A a way for all Ricks to make sure they're the clear dog in their own respective universes), is destroyed by Evil Morty, along with the Citadel.

The end goal? For Malevolent Morty to move back to a multiverse where Rick isn't the smartest, most brilliant man in the cosmos. He succeeds and, thanks to his use of portal engineering, may have even changed Wrick and Morty evermor by putting a serious limit on which universes they can now climb up to – i.e. none.

The series' volte-face towards canon is a unexpected 1, but certainly welcome. Information technology remains to make up seen how permanent these changes are going forward but, if nothing other, the tragic backstory of Rick has been rubber-stamped – and fans have finally got the answers to some of their biggest questions.
